With the StencylForge we can finally cut down on the time that we spend behind the script and we can focus more on building up the game, creating levels and increasing gameplay value.

Anyway, let’s get started!Īs a developer, you’re probably going to spend a lot of time in the StencylForge! The StencylFore is really a huge collaborative project from programmers, developers and artists all around the world! At the StencylForge you can download art, such as sprites and backgrounds, music and sound effects and scripts, or “behaviors” for your actors, or as someone familiarized with Adobe Flash would call them (Actors), “MovieClips.” The StencylForge may just revolutionize the way we make games. Probably my next several tutorials will be on the more basic side as I’m adjusting to it, you’re probably just now adjusting to it as well so I’ll keep it nice and simple going over the basics of the program and everything you need to know about it before diving into the more intermediate tutorials. You can also subscribe to this site by using the right sidebar or bookmark the site! See you around!įor this tutorial, I’m going to give a basic run-down of what the StencylForge is. This is very basic, but very necessary in every game that you’ll make! More tutorials are on the way so check back often.

That pretty much sums up how to add actors to scenes and how to add behaviors to them. You’re also allowed to edit the scripts of these behaviors by clicking “Edit Behavior.” You can check one box to move in an isometric fashion and an eight way movement fashion. If you notice, in the image above there are several boxes you can check and text boxes you can input various integers and variables. If you want you can enable several other features with this script. Now that the “4 Way Movement” script is applied you will be able to move your actor is the four arrow key directions if you test your game (you can test your game by clicking “Test Game” in the top-right of the program).
Double click on the icon and we’ll find that the page that was previous blank, now has the “4 Way Movement” script attached to it. If we double click on the “4 Way Movement” icon we can add this script to our actor that we’ve selected. Remember that “4 Way Movement” script that we downloaded at the StencylForge? You’ll now see it in the box. Now, if you find the tab labeled “Motion” we can add scripts that are in this category. If we then click on the box in the center of the screen find a new window. Once at behaviors we’ll land at a page that looks like this. I’ll cover the other tabs and settings in another tutorial. Once there we’ll want to make our way towards the label “Behaviors” near the top-center of the screen. Once you arrive at Library > Actors you can double click on one of your actors and you’ll end up on a page like this.
Now, let’s learn how to add behaviors to our character so that it can move! If you go to Library > Actors we can find all of our actors. To do that hover the actor over the scene and then click on the scene to drop your actor onto it. Now that you have the actor selected, you can add it to the scene. Select the actor that will be your main character, the actor that you’ll be moving around the screen. In this new menu we’ll find all of our current actors. To add an actor to the scene, we’ll obviously want to hit actor. In the palette, on the right-hand side, we can find two different menus, tiles and actors. What we’ll want to do at this point is to add our actor to the scene. When we do either one of those we can now edit the scene. Once there we can select a previously existing scene, or we can create a completely new one. To actually place the actor on the scene we have to go to our “Game Center” tab and go to Library > Scenes. If you want you can use Pencyl to create your own art for your game, but that is for a later tutorial! Let’s first place the actor on the scene. This will allow us to see the actor and will allow us to, later, control, move and do other things with our actor in our game. What I really want to cover right now is how to get a script that you got from the StencylForge onto an actor! If you don’t already have actors then you can download one from the StencylForge or you can create your own in some art program.
